Evening Gazette Live Review

“Over the past year, FuzzFace frontman has established himself among Colchester’s most enjoyable performers. Playing at the Bull, in Crouch Street with his backing band, Toby Bull on horns, Matt Kelly on drums and Nelson on double bass, Ady demonstrated why he is so hotly-tipped just hours before entering the recording studio. His vivid songs benefit from the band’s unique and classy sound with its distant echoes of Neil Young or Nick Drake’s Bryter Later. Avoiding strum and self-pity, Ady writes pithy songs about love and his life that enthrall without descending to cliche. Melody can be found in every component of songs like Caroline and Pink Flamingos, from the soulful vocal lines, to the carefully crafted guitar parts. If music is this good, why didn’t this gig take place at the Hammersmith Apollo? Well Johnson lacks the bluster that gets people noticed, but it’s his warmth that keeps his audience transfixed. This was just one gig on an Essex evening, but his recording sessions might just produce something that will spread the word a bit further.” Neil D’Arcy-Jones. Colchester Evening Gazette.
